Twenty-three-year-old New Zealand allrounder Zak Foulkes has been living the kind of cricketing dream many young players only imagine. In the past few months, his rise has been nothing short of meteoric. After stunning Zimbabwe with record-breaking bowling figures of 9 for 75 on his Test debut in Bulawayo back in August, he followed it up with a sensational moment in his first ODI against England, when one of his trademark inswingers completely wrong-footed Joe Root in Mount Maunganui. Now, he’s preparing for another unforgettable milestone — his first Test at home, at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the very ground where it all began for his domestic side, Canterbury.
His family and friends will be there in force to witness the occasion. “Yeah, a few friends and family are coming down tomorrow, which will be really cool,” Foulkes shared with a grin. “It’s my first Test in front of them — definitely a special moment for me and my family. I’ve watched a lot of matches here over the years, so to finally be out on that field rather than watching from the other side of the fence feels incredibly rewarding.”
Foulkes’ cricketing roots run deep. His father Glen and brothers Liam and Robbie have all worn Canterbury Country colors. Robbie, a talented top-order batter, even represented New Zealand in the 2024 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, while Liam has taken his passion for the sport overseas, now serving as Cricket Ireland’s national game development manager. Zak’s own journey, though, took an interesting turn — he began as a top-order batsman before realizing that his true gift lay with the ball. On his first-class debut for Canterbury, he opened the innings, but things didn’t go quite as planned. Over time, however, he honed his craft and evolved into a genuine swing bowling threat, both domestically and internationally.
These days, Foulkes is known for that late movement off the pitch that can make the best batters look ordinary. He even joked about teammate Jacob Duffy getting in on the act: “There’s a bit of a running joke that Duffy’s developing a little inswing of his own. I keep telling him to stay in his lane,” Foulkes laughed. “But yeah, my ability to swing the ball gives me something a bit different from the others.”
And that difference could make all the difference at Hagley Oval, where his mastery of swing bowling has paid dividends in Canterbury colors. “Test cricket has always been my number-one goal,” he admitted. “There’s just nothing more rewarding than a red-ball win. The effort that goes into it — every ball, every spell — makes the victory that much sweeter.”
With several key fast bowlers sidelined — Kyle Jamieson, Will O’Rourke, Ben Sears, and Matt Fisher — New Zealand’s pace attack has a new look. But Foulkes and Duffy have filled those gaps with ease, while Blair Tickner’s impressive return adds further strength to the squad. “We’re in a really healthy place right now,” Foulkes said. “When everyone’s available, competition for spots is tough, but that’s what you want. As quicks, injuries are part of the game, so building depth is crucial — and I think we’re doing that really well as a nation.”
Despite his rapid rise, Foulkes admits everything still feels a bit surreal. “It’s happened so fast,” he reflected. “I had a busy winter with a few ‘A’ tours, some time in the UK, then my Test debut in Zimbabwe. Since then, it’s been a lot of white-ball cricket, so I’m actually looking forward to getting the red ball back in hand.”
Interestingly, he hadn’t expected to feature in this home Test at all — but a string of injuries created an opening, and Foulkes is more than ready to seize the moment. With the backing of a proud, cricket-loving family and a ground that feels like home, his focus is sharper than ever.
