Westpac Outage: Thousands of Customers Affected Across Multiple Banks (2026)

Imagine the frustration: you're ready to pay, but your card's not working. Thousands of Westpac customers and those using its affiliated banks experienced this exact scenario.

On December 10, 2025, a significant outage at Westpac caused widespread disruption. This impacted numerous customers across several banks owned by Westpac, preventing them from accessing online banking and using EFTPOS terminals.

Westpac acknowledged the issue, stating they were working to resolve it swiftly. However, they didn't specify the cause of the problem. A spokesperson simply said, "We're aware some customers are experiencing issues accessing banking services... We're working to restore services as quickly as possible and apologise to customers for the inconvenience."

But here's where it gets controversial... The outage also affected customers of St George, BankSA, and Bank of Melbourne. According to reports from DownDetector, issues began to surface just before 1 PM. At its peak, over 1,000 people reported problems with their services.

Interestingly, Westpac's other subsidiaries, RAMS and BT, were unaffected by this widespread outage.

What do you think caused this outage? Was it a technical glitch, or something more complex? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
