Top 3 ETFs to Buy in 2026: Real Estate, Small-Caps, & AI Revolution | Long-Term Investing Strategies (2026)

Ready to supercharge your investment strategy for 2026? I'm diving deep into Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and have pinpointed three that I'm incredibly excited about. I've spent about 15 years building a portfolio of individual stocks, and it's definitely possible to beat the market this way. Warren Buffett and many others have built their fortunes focusing on great businesses and holding their shares. But, as I gain more experience, my strategy is evolving to include a robust 'backbone' for my portfolio, with ETFs that should perform well over time, regardless of any single company's success.

1. Riding the Real Estate Wave: Vanguard Real Estate ETF (VNQ)

I'm betting on the real estate sector in 2026, and here's why. I foresee interest rates trending lower, and real estate tends to thrive in a lower-rate environment. That's why I'm planning to add shares of the Vanguard Real Estate ETF (VNQ) to my portfolio.

Lower interest rates act as a positive catalyst for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) in several ways:

  • Cheaper Borrowing: REITs can borrow money more cheaply to buy properties.
  • Investor Shift: Investors often move money from lower-yielding assets like savings accounts into higher-yielding assets like REITs as rates fall.
  • Property Valuation: Commercial property values are closely tied to the interest rate environment. Properties tend to be worth more when rates are lower.

The Vanguard Real Estate ETF is an index fund that gives you exposure to real estate investment trusts, and it has a low 0.13% expense ratio. It's a solid choice for income investors, but with falling interest rates, it has the potential for market-beating returns.

2. The Small-Cap Comeback: Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF (VTWO)

Small-cap stocks are currently trading at their lowest valuations compared to large-cap stocks since the late 1990s. The rise of megacap tech stocks and the surge in artificial intelligence (AI) investment have contributed to this valuation gap. The average company in the Russell 2000 small-cap index trades for 2.1 times book value, while the average S&P 500 company trades for more than 5 times book.

I invested heavily in the Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF (VTWO) in 2025, and I plan to continue accumulating shares in 2026. With a rock-bottom 0.07% expense ratio and broad small-cap exposure, the Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF could be a big winner in 2026 and beyond.

3. The AI Revolution: Ark Autonomous Technology and Robotics ETF (ARKQ)

Trillions of dollars are being invested in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, and the rate of investment is accelerating. I already have exposure to the megacap AI stocks through other index funds, and evaluating individual AI companies isn't my specialty, so I prefer the ETF route. The Ark Autonomous Technology and Robotics ETF (ARKQ) is an actively managed ETF run by Cathie Wood. This ETF offers exposure to a portfolio of stocks that could be big winners of the AI revolution, but it doesn't just focus on the megacaps. You won't find Nvidia or any of the other trillion-dollar tech companies among its top holdings. But you will find companies like Teradyne, Kratos Defense & Security, and Aerovironment.

Important Note: I'm planning to buy shares of all three of these ETFs as long-term investments, not just because I think they could outperform the market in 2026. There's no guarantee that interest rates will trend downward in 2026, nor is it possible to know whether there will be general weakness in the economy or any particular sector. However, over the long term, investors who purchase these three ETFs at their current prices are likely to do quite well.
