In popular science fiction, Mars is often portrayed as a harsh but conquerable frontier, much like the wild west of Earth. But the reality is far more grim. Stepping out onto Mars without protection is an instant death sentence. Creating a livable environment is possible, but it's more akin to building a high-tech submarine or space station than a frontier town.

Myth 1: Building a Colony on the Surface is Feasible
Reality: Most habitats will likely be underground.
While many sci-fi stories involve terraforming planets or building surface settlements, the truth is, terraforming Mars would be an incredibly daunting task.
Dr. Jeffrey Bennett, an astrophysicist and author, explains, "The idea is to change Mars so humans can survive outside without spacesuits. It would require increasing air pressure by almost 200 times and ensuring the right oxygen and greenhouse gas mix for warmth."
The problem? There's likely not enough carbon dioxide trapped in Martian water, soil, or minerals to release and create a thick atmosphere. At best, we'd achieve around 7-12% of Earth's atmospheric pressure, which is insufficient for human survival, requiring at least 50%.
Myth 2: Mars is Just a Cold Desert
Reality: Mars' atmosphere is lethal, and its temperatures are extreme.
In movies like "Mission to Mars", the surface is depicted as manageable, with characters briefly exposed to it without harm. But in reality, Mars' atmosphere is only 1% as dense as Earth's and composed mostly of carbon dioxide. One breath would be fatal due to the low pressure and lack of oxygen.
"You'd need oxygen for habitats and spacesuits," says Dr. Bennett. "Extracting oxygen from Mars' air is possible, as the Perseverance rover demonstrated, but scaling it up for a colony is challenging."
Additionally, Mars is incredibly cold, with average surface temperatures of -80°F (-62°C), dropping to -125°F (-87°C) at night. Even if you solved the pressure and oxygen issues, hypothermia would quickly set in, leading to cognitive impairment, motor function loss, and eventually, cardiac arrest.
Myth 3: Low Gravity is Harmless
Reality: Mars' gravity could permanently damage the human body.
The idea of effortlessly bounding across Mars is appealing, but in reality, long-term exposure to low gravity has withering effects. Astronauts lose about 1-1.5% of bone density per month in low gravity. Long-term complications like cardiovascular changes and balance issues are also likely without countermeasures.
"The gravity on Mars is only about 1/3 of Earth's," explains Dr. Bennett. "While short-term survival is possible, we have no data on the effects of living many years in low gravity. We don't know what would happen to babies born in that gravity or if their bodies could ever adapt to Earth's gravity."
Myth 4: Growing Food on Mars is Simple
Reality: Martian soil is toxic, and farming is an experimental challenge.
Martian soil is filled with perchlorates, chemical salts derived from perchloric acid, similar to table salt but much more toxic. They're used for rocket fuel, explosives, and fireworks on Earth. Any crops would need extensive soil treatment.
Even in "The Martian", the protagonist can only grow crops by ignoring the issue of perchlorates. While his method of mixing regolith with human waste and water might work with clean soil, purifying the soil first is essential.
Additionally, extensive hydroponics or aeroponics and water recycling in a closed loop would be necessary. Detoxifying the soil at scale would require specially engineered microbes or fungi, making an actual Martian farm more like a biotech lab.
Myth 5: The Journey to Mars is the Hardest Part
Reality: Psychological survival may be as challenging as physical survival.
A Mars mission could last two to three years round-trip, with extreme isolation and communication delays, especially for early pioneers. Managing sleep disruption, confinement stress, and mood and cognitive effects with limited human contact is vital.
Dr. Bennett writes, "Despite these challenges, humans will likely reach Mars successfully within the next decade or two. But would anyone want to live there permanently? I'm doubtful. You'd always need a spacesuit, and the radiation danger means you'd likely live underground. While living on a new world sounds adventurous, I suspect people would quickly want to return home."
The "Earth-out-of-view" phenomenon, where settlers watch Earth shrink to a tiny dot and disappear, would cause profound detachment and the knowledge that help is not just far away but non-existent. The sensory poverty and extreme monotony of living in a small environment, eating bland rehydrated food, and breathing recycled air, could lead to irritability, depression, and cognitive decline.
To combat this, NASA has experimented with "veggie pods", where the scent of a real tomato can positively impact mental health.
The Reality of Mars Survival
While it's technically possible for humans to survive on Mars, it would require massive resource injections from Earth and highly engineered habitats with continuous life-support systems, radiation shielding, closed water and food systems, and reliable energy sources. A settlement on Mars would be more like living inside a habitat designed to keep Mars out.
In Dr. Bennett's words, "Given that we already struggle to maintain Earth's ecosystem, it seems presumptuous to think we could do better starting from scratch on Mars."
