Sudan is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, and the world cannot afford to look away. But here's where it gets controversial: the country is now pleading with the international community to put pressure on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to halt its alleged support for the Janjaweed militia, a group accused of fueling the escalating displacement crisis. This crisis has already forced over 12 million Sudanese to flee their homes, either internally or abroad, transforming Sudan from a nation that once welcomed refugees into one of the largest sources of displacement globally.
In a powerful address at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council in Geneva on December 8, 2025, Sudan's Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General (Police) Babiker Samra Mustafa, painted a grim picture of the situation. He emphasized the Janjaweed's deliberate targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure, pointing to recent massacres in El-Fashir and other regions as evidence of their devastating impact. And this is the part most people miss: the minister argued that external support, particularly from the UAE, is not only prolonging the conflict but also deepening the suffering of innocent civilians and destabilizing the entire region.
Despite these immense challenges, Sudan is actively working to strengthen its migration management systems. In partnership with the IOM, the country is implementing tighter border controls, dismantling human-smuggling networks, modernizing identity and registration systems, and organizing voluntary return programs for displaced citizens. These efforts, however, are being undermined by the ongoing rebellion and the continued external backing of the Janjaweed.
