Sinopec's Eco-Friendly Solution: Biodegradable PBST Mulch Film for Xinjiang's Cotton Fields (2025)

A groundbreaking solution to a pressing environmental challenge has emerged from China's Xinjiang region. Sinopec's PBST material is a game-changer for cotton farming, offering a fully biodegradable alternative to traditional plastic mulch films.

/PRNewswire/ - Sinopec, a leading Chinese energy and chemical company, has successfully piloted its innovative PBST (polybutylene succinate-co-terephthalate) mulch film in Wusu, Xinjiang. This pilot project is a significant step towards addressing the issue of residual plastic pollution in cotton fields while maintaining stable crop yields.

The results are impressive: PBST mulch film, developed entirely by Sinopec, has demonstrated equivalent cotton yields compared to traditional polyethylene (PE) mulch film. Its degradation performance and moisture-retention capabilities have met expectations, providing a sustainable and eco-friendly solution.

Xinjiang, a major cotton-producing region, has long relied on PE mulch films to regulate soil moisture and temperature. However, these films are challenging to degrade naturally, leading to severe plastic film accumulation. Other biodegradable films, like PBAT, often degrade too quickly, affecting crop growth. PBST, on the other hand, offers superior anti-UV and moisture-barrier performance, fully degrading into harmless substances within one to three years across various regions and crops.

Sinopec is committed to tackling the residual mulch film challenge. In March, they commissioned the world's first 60,000-ton-per-year PBST industrial production facility. In April, their teams collaborated with local authorities and the Liaoning Dongsheng Group to launch a large-scale PBST mulch film pilot in Xinjiang, covering over ten thousand mu of cotton fields.

The October assessments confirmed the success of PBST. Fields using PBST mulch achieved yields on par with traditional PE film, but with significantly faster film degradation. The PBST film will naturally decompose into water, carbon dioxide, and minerals, eliminating the need for manual retrieval and reducing soil pollution. This solution not only meets Xinjiang's cotton growth needs but also offers economic and environmental benefits, providing a scalable and replicable model for sustainable agriculture.
