In 2026, Scottie Scheffler is once again poised for success at one of his favorite venues. Having claimed victory twice at TPC Scottsdale, he arrives just ten days after celebrating his 20th win on the PGA Tour, a milestone that secures him a lifetime exemption within the circuit. Additionally, Scheffler enters this season with an impressive four major championship titles, two of which he earned last year.
However, Scheffler isn’t dwelling on his recent triumph at the American Express; instead, he’s focused on the present and preparing for the upcoming WM Phoenix Open. "I’ve always found that I perform best when I concentrate on being present and tackling the tasks at hand," he shared during a media briefing, with his nearly two-year-old son, Bennett, nearby. "I had a solid start to the season at the American Express. Despite a chaotic week at home with icy conditions, I managed to get in some practice, and now I’m here, eager to compete in this tournament and the ones following it on Tour. It’s an exhilarating time, but maintaining my focus day by day has always been my approach."
While focus is essential on the Tour, it becomes even more critical this week, especially on specific holes like the renowned No. 16. Scheffler welcomes the challenge.
"I’ve always relished this kind of test. The golf course really shines during tournament play, as it’s fast and firm. It demands precision with a variety of shots, and the vibrant crowds add to the excitement," he noted. "Playing in front of such a large audience is thrilling; it can be overwhelming at times, but ultimately, it’s a lot of fun."
Having competed here six times previously, Scheffler is well-acquainted with the course layout and its enthusiastic fans, yet he still marvels at the experience. "It’s pretty wild, honestly. This atmosphere is vastly different from what we encounter throughout the rest of the year. It’s genuinely enjoyable and offers a unique experience that all professionals should cherish."
He added with a chuckle, "When you’re flying in, you can spot the buildings and immediately pinpoint where the golf course is. It truly is a spectacle!"
But here's where it gets intriguing: While many athletes thrive under pressure, how does the intensity of such a lively environment affect their performance? Are larger crowds motivating or distracting for players like Scheffler? Feel free to share your thoughts or experiences in the comments!
