The Nashville Electric Service (NES) has been facing scrutiny for its vegetation management practices, which have traditionally fallen behind schedule. Despite warnings that inadequate tree trimming increases the risk of more frequent and longer power outages, the utility has been struggling to keep up with maintenance. This issue has come to light following a crippling ice storm on January 24, 2026, that left thousands of Nashvillians without power for days. Fallen tree limbs were a primary cause of the outages, and the city still shows signs of storm damage. NES, like most electric utilities, is responsible for managing vegetation around power lines, but it has been falling short of its industry-standard three- to four-year trimming cycle. Board meeting records indicate that the utility has been 12% ahead of schedule after consolidating operations under a single contractor, but this progress was short-lived, as unforeseen challenges prevented the utility from completing its schedule the following year. NES CEO Teresa Broyles-Aplin defended the utility's tree-trimming program as 'robust' and claimed they are on track for this year's tree trimming. However, the utility has reduced its vegetation management spending by nearly 33% since 2023, and the actual spending in 2024 and 2025 was 34.7% and 32.8% lower than in 2023, respectively. This discrepancy has raised questions about the allocation of the vegetation management budget, with Broyles-Aplin attributing the lower costs to program updates, lower contractor services, and lower trimming costs per mile. The utility's spending cuts have sparked concerns about the quality of vegetation management and the potential impact on power outages.
