A young man's solo adventure in the Romanian mountains has turned into a desperate search, leaving his family and community in a state of agonizing uncertainty. This is the heartbreaking reality for George Smyth, an 18-year-old student from the University of Bristol, who has been missing for over a week in the Bucegi Mountains of Romania.
Reports indicate that George, a Shropshire native, embarked on a solo hiking trip, a journey that began on November 23rd. He was last seen after leaving Poiana Brașov, with his intended destination being Bran, the location of the famous Dracula's castle. But here's where the situation took a turn. George contacted emergency services via the 112 number from Tiganesti, revealing he was disoriented, physically exhausted, and showing early signs of hypothermia.
His mother, Jo Smyth, shared her anguish with Antena1 TV, stating, "We are hoping and praying he's somehow survived this, against all odds, as the thought of life without him is unbearable." She described her son as "a very bright, loving and adventurous young man."
But this is where the story becomes more complex. George's phone signal was last traced to a remote mountainous area. The local mountain rescue service, led by Sebastian Marinescu, described the challenging conditions: "very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area" with "extremely severe with strong winds, heavy snowfall, and dense fog." He was advised to turn back, but the question remains: why didn't he?
Despite the harsh conditions, the search has been relentless. Over 50 mountain rescuers, a canine unit, drones, and helicopters have been deployed. However, after seven days, the search was temporarily suspended due to the risk of avalanches. Only a backpack containing his belongings has been found. The rescue service remains "fully committed to doing everything within our power to bring George back."
A key detail that adds another layer of emotion is that George kept his travel plans secret from his family, as revealed by his mother. This has added to their worry, as they are now in Romania, supporting the search efforts.
George's rugby club in Newport, Shropshire, has also expressed its deep concern. The club described him as a "much-loved member" who had grown up through its junior section and often helped coach younger age groups. The University of Bristol and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office are also providing support.
