Bold headline: Toronto FC lands Josh Sargent on a potential record-breaking deal, reshaping MLS finance and expectations.
The Josh Sargent saga has reached its conclusion. Toronto FC confirmed the United States forward’s move from Norwich City on Friday, a transfer that could exceed £20 million with add-ons and potentially stand as MLS’s biggest ever. The current landmark was Son Heung-min’s move to Los Angeles FC from Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
Toronto FC’s announcement states the contract runs through the 2030-31 season.
This signing closes a period of tension between the 26-year-old St. Louis native and the club. In January, Toronto manager Philippe Clement relegated Sargent from the first team after he declined to be available for an FA Cup match with Walsall. Sargent had made clear his desire to move to Toronto following the birth of his third child. Norwich had attracted interest from clubs in England and on the continent, but Sargent reportedly wanted Toronto above all. The dispute made him a controversial figure at Carrow Road, despite previously being a fan favorite with the Canaries.
Before the demotion, Sargent had tallied seven goals in 22 Championship appearances this season. Across five seasons with Norwich, he scored 53 goals in 146 league games. A Werder Bremen academy product, he made his senior debut for the German club in 2018.
On the international stage, Sargent has earned 29 caps for the U.S. men’s national team, contributing five goals. He was part of the U.S. squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Sargent now joins a reconfigured Reds squad that began reshaping after the departures of Designated Players Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi last summer. Additional new faces at BMO Field include veteran center-back Walker Zimmerman, goalkeeper William Yarbrough, left-back Matheus Pereira, Hungary winger Daniel Salloi, and Colombia U-20 forward Emilio Aristizábal.
“We are thrilled to welcome Josh to Toronto FC as a foundational piece of what we have been building here at the club since last summer,” Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez said in a club release.
“He brings high-level experience from some of the world’s strongest leagues and international pedigree at just 26. He is a proven goalscorer with a winning mentality and the intelligence to drive our attack for years to come. Josh is entering his prime and will represent our club and our city. From the outset of talks with Josh and his representatives, it was clear he isn’t just the right footballer but the right person to elevate the culture we’re cultivating. We’re excited for him and his family to begin this new journey in Toronto, and we’re counting on every supporter to back him as he defends our badge on the field.”
“I’m excited to join Toronto FC and begin a new chapter for my family in Toronto,” Sargent added in the release. “I’m grateful to everyone at the club for believing in me and supporting the transfer process. What stood out to me about the project was the ambition to build a competitive, winning team. I can’t wait to get started and play in front of the amazing fans at BMO Field.”
Toronto FC’s 2026 season opener is set for Saturday night against FC Dallas.
