The One Piece singer, Maki Otsuki, faced an unexpected interruption during her Shanghai performance, a consequence of the strained diplomatic relations between Japan and China. Otsuki, renowned for her theme song in the popular anime, was set to perform for two days at the Bandai Namco Festival 2025. However, her management announced on her official website that she had to abruptly halt her performance on Friday due to unforeseen circumstances, even though she was in the middle of her act. This incident is part of a series of cancellations affecting cultural events involving the two Asian economic powerhouses.
The tensions between Beijing and Tokyo escalated this month following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested that Tokyo might intervene militarily in any attack on Taiwan. China, which considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force, reacted with fury, summoning Japan's ambassador and advising Chinese citizens against traveling to Japan. The Bandai Namco Festival 2025, which was scheduled to run through Sunday, was canceled after organizers considered various factors, according to Kyodo News. This decision also impacted the popular Japanese girl idol group Momoiro Clover Z, who were set to perform on Saturday.
Other artists and shows that have been forced to cancel performances in China include pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki and jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara. Hamasaki expressed her disappointment, stating, 'I still strongly believe that entertainment should be a bridge that connects us, and that I should be the creator of that bridge.' The cancellations come at a time when the two countries are engaged in a war of words over Taiwan, with China's stance on the island's status and potential military action raising concerns and sparking debates.
