The Llyn Peninsula, a place of contrasts, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and human interaction. On day 31 of our hike, we encountered a group of golfers at a beach bar, their enthusiasm for the local pub culture and golf courses evident. What makes this particularly fascinating is the way they tried to impress us with their knowledge of the area, even though they seemed to have a limited understanding of the 'hiking the coast path' concept. Their suggestions, like visiting the Ty Coch Inn, a 'really good beach bar', were intriguing, but the reasoning behind its ranking as the third best beach bar in the world remained a mystery. The mention of beer and pubs, including one frequented by Crusaders, added a layer of historical intrigue to their conversation.
As for our journey, we were grateful for the peaceful paths and quiet waters, a stark contrast to the 'Hell's Gate' we encountered earlier. The bay, with its wrecked boats and deceptive rocks, was a reminder of the power of nature. However, the placid waters and the sight of a red fox in the dunes made it a heavenly experience. The climb over the headland, with its stunning views and diverse wildlife, was a highlight, offering a sense of paradise amidst the challenges. The pigs we saw, a first for me, added a touch of humor to the adventure.
In Abersoch, we witnessed the impact of wealth on a former fishing harbor village. The narrow streets were lined with Jaguars and Audis, a stark contrast to the quaint charm of the town. The Welsh Riviera, as some call it, has retained its old-world appeal, despite the new wealth. The golf course, with its electric carts and practice swings, provided a moment of respite from the trail, allowing us to appreciate the local amenities. Siri, our digital companion, struggled with Welsh street names, adding a touch of humor to our journey.
This experience, filled with human interaction and natural wonders, has been a privilege. The Llyn Peninsula, with its contrasts and surprises, has offered a unique adventure, leaving us with memories to cherish. As we continue our journey, we are grateful for the opportunity to explore and appreciate the beauty of this place, and we look forward to the next chapter of our adventure.
