Yet, despite the life-changing benefits, over 40,000 customers of Blue Cross and Point32Health have lost coverage for GLP-1s this year alone. And the situation is set to worsen, with a recent vote to end coverage for state employees and retirees, potentially affecting over 460,000 individuals.
"I take this medicine because I need it, not for fun," explains Michelle Markert, an interior designer who has relied on GLP-1s to manage her weight. "Now, I'm faced with a choice: pay $500 a month out of pocket or risk regaining the weight I've worked so hard to lose."
But here's where it gets controversial...
Insurers blame the high costs on pharmaceutical companies, citing unsustainable expenses. Blue Cross, for instance, spent a staggering $515 million on GLP-1s in 2025, up from $140 million in 2023.
"The cost of these medications is simply too high," says Amy McHugh, a spokesperson for Blue Cross. "Lowering the prices would be a crucial step towards ensuring coverage for those who need it."
And this is the part most people miss...
While pharmaceutical companies like Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk are taking steps to reduce prices, the impact on patients remains significant. Direct-to-consumer programs offer some hope, with prices ranging from $149 to $449 a month, but these programs create a two-tier system, disadvantaging those who cannot afford such costs.
"There are substantial dangers in taking these medications away from patients," warns Dr. Paul Copeland, an endocrinologist specializing in obesity medicine. "Rapid weight gain and a worsening of comorbidities are real concerns."
