Get ready for some thrilling Formula 1 action! The Bahrain pre-season test is heating up, and it's a battle for the top spot. Mercedes takes the lead, but by a hair's breadth!
George Russell, the Mercedes driver, set the fastest lap so far, clocking an impressive 1m33.459s. That's two-tenths faster than his teammate's time from last week, and both were achieved with C3 tyres. Russell wasn't the only one improving; Oscar Piastri gained a whole second, setting a 1m33.469s, and even led the timesheet for a while before Russell's late surge.
But here's where it gets controversial... Charles Leclerc, on prototype rubber, set the morning benchmark at 1m33.739s, which is Ferrari's quickest lap yet. However, Ferrari's day wasn't without its hiccups, as Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, managed only 44 laps due to an unspecified issue that kept him in the garage for 90 minutes.
The top five were rounded out by Lando Norris and Kimi Antonelli, with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar completing the day's laps. Hadjar's personal best was 1m34.260s, but a technical issue with the engine's coolant circuits restricted his morning activity to just 13 laps.
As feared by some teams, the gap to the top remained significant. Williams, in fifth, was 1.654s behind the pacesetter, Piastri. Alpine, Audi, and Racing Bulls trailed by 1.795s, 1.804s, and 2.294s, respectively.
Among the remaining teams, Aston Martin and Cadillac had troubled days. Aston suffered a power unit issue, spending four hours in the garage, and when Lance Stroll finally got going, he caused a red flag by spinning into the gravel trap. Cadillac, on the other hand, lost three hours mostly in the garage due to sensor issues.
Despite the troubles, Aston managed to improve by over two seconds compared to last week, while Cadillac's yet-to-be-named car didn't record a meaningful lap time.
And this is the part most people miss... Amid concerns about the start procedure with the new F1 machinery, a start sequence was simulated at the end of the day, and none of the 10 cars stalled!
