Imagine the sheer terror: A surfer, swallowed by the unforgiving sea in the dead of night, far from shore. This is the reality faced off Piha Beach, where a dramatic rescue unfolded, showcasing the bravery and skill of surf lifeguards and police. The relieved words of the surfer's mother, "We wouldn’t be bringing our boy home today if it wasn't for them," echo the gravity of the situation.
Emergency services received the call around 8 pm on a Tuesday, alerted that a surfer was missing, pulled out to sea by a powerful rip current north of Lion Rock. The Eagle helicopter and two inflatable rescue boats (IRBs) from the Piha Surf Life Saving Club sprang into action.
But here's where the tension ratchets up: as darkness deepened, the IRBs were forced to retreat, relying on the helicopter to locate the missing surfer. Senior Sergeant Garry Larsen highlighted the urgency, stating that the deteriorating weather conditions added to the challenge. The helicopter widened its search using infrared cameras.
Around 9 pm, a glimmer of hope – the 21-year-old surfer was spotted, clinging to his board and waving, approximately 1.5 km offshore of Camel Rock, a significant distance from where he was last seen. With the Eagle's spotlight guiding them, the IRBs bravely navigated the treacherous waters to reach him.
"The crew quickly collected him and made it back to the beach in complete darkness," Larsen said. But the ordeal wasn't over. The IRBs battled 2-3 meter waves in the pitch black, a testament to their skill and determination.
Reaching the shore, the surfer, now cold and suffering from hypothermia, was treated by lifeguards before being transported to the hospital by ambulance around 10:30 pm. Thankfully, he was later discharged.
Larsen emphasized the teamwork that made the rescue possible, especially given the adverse conditions. Andy Kent, Surf Lifesaving NZ’s general manager of lifesaving, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collaboration between police and surf lifeguards. "Executing an offshore rescue in the dark, after hours, is complex; it takes careful planning, cool heads and exceptional capability. The Piha surf lifeguards once again demonstrated why they are among the best-skilled experienced responders on our coastline.”
Piha Surf Life Saving Club captain Jess Wanden-Hannay also praised her lifeguards, and the surfer's mother expressed her gratitude.
But here's a crucial reminder: Larsen urged everyone to prioritize safety at the beach, especially during summer. He stressed the importance of knowing your limits, never going alone, and always having someone keeping an eye on you. Unfamiliar rips, reefs, and currents can catch even the most experienced swimmers and surfers off guard.
